DOT stands for Department of Transportation, and the DOT sets the standards for brake fluid. The two specifications they look at are boiling point and viscosity. The boiling point is the temperature at which the brake fluid starts to boil or become vapor. DOT specifies a dry and wet boiling point.

All the Ford licensed Mercon LV fluids I found other than Motorcraft are also licensed by GM for Dexron VI (dual licensed). Valvoline Maxlife LV is not a Ford licensed Mercon LV fluid but says if you have problems with it to contact them. It is a 4.5cSt@100C fluid which has a lower viscosity than an LV of 5.9cSt@100C and which is lower than the older DexIII/Mercon fluid of 7.2cSt@100C. Originally, I planned to get Mercon LV from Advance Auto parts, but they did not have any in stock, so I got Peak Full Synthetic Multi-vehicle (ATF) Automatic Transmission Fluid recommemded by them. I think many have used Maxlife in Mercon LV applications without issues but if you want to use a Ford approved Mercon LV replacement. Castrol Transmax Synthetic Multi-Vehicle ATF is such a product whereas Maxlife is "Recommended For Use In"..I also see the Pennzoil LV has a Mercon LV license..it's currently ON SALE at NAPA for .79 a . the mercon lv fluid is a deep red color, compared to conventional mercon v bright red fluid, and the color naturally darkens at relatively low mileage. IN SOME CASES, THE FLUID MAY APPEAR TO HAVE A GREEN TINT DUE TO DYE USED TO CHECK FOR LEAKS AT THE ASSEMBLY PLANT.

I am using Maxlife MV in my vehicle currently at about a 65/55 mix to OEM licensed fluid, along with some Lubeguard Platinum. Maxlife LV is in range for an LV fluid, as my vehicle specs. Mainly because it's easily accessible at Walmart and priced well.
